Getting past Writer's Block

Ever find yourself without something to say? It is an abysmal thing when you are speaking to someone and all the words you could say just fall out of your head and you are left with a huge blank.

"Uhhhhhhh..."

It is even worse when you are a writer. You have everything set. Clean paper in front of you, your favorite pen, just the right ambiance... and no words come to you at all. You might even start writing hoping the words come and they still don't.

You have hit that wall we call writer's block.

It comes to each and every one of us at some time or another. Nobody knows why. Some blame it on stress, but I find it easier sometimes to write while stressed.

The fact is, you have to figure out how to get past the block. For some, putting the pen down and going and doing physical exercise is the key. For others, meditation.

Sometimes it just takes bursting through whatever your block is. Now how do you do that?

There are books a'plenty out there with hints on how to get over writer's block. One of the more interesting ways that I find can help is to put that pen to paper and just write. Word after word shove themselves onto paper, completely nonsensical as there is no punctuation and half the time one word will be repeated over and over again ad infinitum until whatever was causing the block crumbles and the words begin to make sense. They form intriguing ideas, formulate interesting premises and suddenly I am off...

Before I know it, I have five chapters written of a story that wasn't in my head just four hours before.

Lately I have been having a hard time writing, especially with the horrible news that no matter how hard I work not to hear... well when something that horrendous hits it is impossible not to. Last night, I sat down and wrote the most depressing, most horrid, most hideous 500 word flash fiction I can remember writing.

It poured out onto the page with anger and fury. When I was finished, I stared at the thing in horror, unable to believe that I had penned it.

This morning, the characters from the story I have been unable to write lately are chatting in my head quite amicably. I can only assume their silence was due to a block I needed to get out. So, as horrible as Death of a Dream was to write, I must thank it. Obviously I needed to get it out so that I could return to what I want to write.

Write what you need to write... it might not necessarily be what you want to write in that moment, but it might be just what you need.

Six Sentence Sunday

Hi fellow sixers! Enjoying today's group of wonderful six's? Who knew 6 was such a wonderful number?

Today I am sharing a small bit from one of my WIPs. This is another dating service story. A few weeks ago I shared with you the beginning of Ari's date from hell with Jay, the man who talks and eats at the same time. This is from a little further on in the date.

“So, Arrrrwin,” Jay said, growling the ‘r’ like a pirate while pronouncing her given name wrong. Against her better judgment, she tuned back into the conversation. “Jane tells me you were a bit crazy in college.” He winked at her and leered.

As she fought back the food that wanted to come back up her esophagus, she caught the look of pity from a woman one table over. Obviously Jay’s voice carried.

If you think this date is bad, you should see some of the other men her sister has set her up with. The woman has seriously bad taste in men.

My first dating service story is L'Amore Perfetto, which is available in both e and Print formats.

Six Sentence Sunday - L'Amore Perfetto is in paperback!

Hi happy Sixers! Are you ready for the holidays? I can't believe it is Dec 9th already!

I'm giving you another look into L'Amore Perfetto as just this week it came out in paperback form. YAY! After my book In Search of the Drasta came out in paperback, I wasn't sure if I was going to do it again as I wasn't completely pleased with the final look. But this one? OMG! I pulled it out of the box and squealed! Yep, looks that good.

In this scene, Nicki has entered L'Amore Perfetto training and is getting to know the other participants. Jasmine starts to discuss her brothers, both of whom are also in the program.
Her eyes lit up. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you were partnered with one of them? My brothers are pretty fine, let me tell you.”

I burst into laughter and she cocked her head. “Sorry, Jasmine…Jazz, that reminded me. When I went to the dinner party, one of the women made mention of the nice looking Lambert men who were part of the program.”

Book Description:
Romance meets a modern-day fairy-tale.

Nicki hates to date; the whole putting herself out there night after night after night is not her thing. Unfortunately, her roommate is the exact opposite. When Kristen comes up with her newest man-catching ploy, joining a discriminating dating service that accepts less than 5% of its female applicants, Nicki sees an opportunity and gets Kristen to agree that if she applies and does not get accepted, that Kristen won’t bug her about going out for nine months.

Full steam ahead, she jumps into the multi-step application process. Each step increases her desire to make it to the next one and when she makes it, she is thrown into a world she didn’t know existed. Will she falter in this new life or will she make it to the end and meet her soul mate?

Posted this to This Thought Counts and forgot to add a reminder here.
So, here you go!

Six Sentence Sunday

Hi fellow sixers! Happy Six to you!

This week, I am sharing a little from my scifi/fantasy novel In Search of the Drasta.

The planet of E'Loi lived a good existence now that the Travelers were gone. Except for one thing - they could no longer reproduce. Thus, the leading scientists of the planet were placed in charge of creating a fix for the problem. Kape Kruence came up with one, but it quickly turned bad and he was banished to the mines of Swapesh. The other senior scientists were then charged with finding a fix.

Soon enough the problem became insurmountable in their minds and the senior scientists thought it would be best to retire and hand the problem over to all the junior scientists; in the name of saving their world, of course, not because they didn’t want to end up like Kape who was now working the mines of Swapesh forever; they made that point very clear. So clear in fact that the rulers of E’Loi got tired of their self-serving attitude and sent them all to work in the mines of Swapesh anyway, just to get rid of them.

The junior scientists were ecstatic as they had so many ideas that the seniors would not even think of. They made the proposal that the person who came up with an idea that worked would become Chief Scientist forever, or until he decided to step down. Their offer accepted: they set about making plans. Of the seventeen scientists who were trying to fix the problem, 3 groups ended up forming: one group of twelve, one group of four, and one lone scientist who said he did not want to work with others because he was too smart for any of them, which is the actual reason none of them had asked him to be on their team.

Book Description:

Some days it just doesn’t pay to be brilliant. Braun Tapesh is the chief scientist for the planet E’Loi and is happy to tell anyone who happens to be standing near him that it is he who saved his planet.

Despite his advanced scientific knowledge, Braun makes a small mistake and finds himself on a rescue mission to find the Drasta—the last true Eloim female born on the planet. Unwillingly thrown into his own science experiment, he is tossed across the universe in a special chamber he created. Much to his dismay, he is transported into the body of a university student and must learn to eat Earth food and adjust to life on a college campus—all while still focusing on his important mission to locate the Drasta and bring her home. Soon, he is traveling from planet-to-planet with two humans, a princess, and a half-dwarf in tow. But someone else is on the same mission and will do anything to snatch the Drasta first.

Just when Braun wonders what could possibly be worse, he realizes he never should have asked.

Positive thoughts are live and kicking

Today I started my 31 days of motivationa/positive thoughts on my blog This Thought Counts. I originally started This Thought Counts to place my blogs from when I was heavily into the Boundless Living Challenge, but had let it lag for a couple years. Well, no more.

For the month of December, I am posting a motivational thought and image every day to help you raise your vibration so that you can achieve your dreams. Me too:)

So go on, head on over and check it out. And you are welcome to display the images anywhere you want. Just save them to your computer and post them. All I ask is that you do not change the image in any way.

If you post a positive/motivational/life-affirming blog post, comment that day on mine. I will add the links to a list to have on the site so that others can visit:)

Thanks and Enjoy!

Up That Vibration!

Let's make 2013 the best yet - and to prepare - let's up our vibration before we get there. Join me over at This Thought Counts for 31 days of positive, uplifting, vibrationally charged messages.

1 hour, that is all that I ask.

I cannot believe the holiday season is already here. Thanksgiving is past and Christmas and New Years are barreling down on us like some huge avalanche.

Where did July go?

And why is Christmas staring me in the eyes.

My mother is big into Christmas and gift giving and the whole family blah, blah, blah. I would prefer to go to a cabin in the middle of the woods with my significant other on Dec 21st and not come out until January 2nd. But then - I've always been a bit of a mole. Hide away from the world. Plus, tons of us time.

This year I did something different. I decorated - in a way. I strung two sets of Christmas lights around my room. Now, one is a regular set and the other? Flamingos. How can you not smile when looking at  set of tacky flamingo holiday lights?

The next month will be filled with stress, both from the season and the fact that the energy field will be filled with stress from those around us. How about this?

Everyone go grab a coffee, sit in a coffee house with your best friend every day at 2pm (wherever you are) for an hour? Just for that one hour de-stress, laugh, kid and enjoy yourself. Just for that one hour, your entire energy field will be relaxed without any issues. I think the rest of the day would be bare-able if we had that hour.

So who's with me? Starbucks on 72nd at 2pm?

See you there;)

Six Sentence Sunday

Here is this week's Six Sentence Sunday! Be sure and check the others out as well:)

This week I am giving you a sneak peek into a WIP of mine. Top Secret shhhh. lol This is the very first paragraph in a new young adult novel I am writing.

"The whole building was filled with the kind of excitement that only the last day of school could bring. Hundreds of eyes, student and teacher alike, stared at the clock that sat far up on the wall of every classroom. As the second-hand reached fifteen seconds to go, students the whole school over began to gather their notebooks, pens, and jackets in preparation for their freedom. All except for seven classrooms in the east wing. They were excited for a far different reason. Soon they would learn where they would go to high school and for every one of them – it felt as though they had waited their entire lives for this."

Feel free to follow my blog to check out other sneaks from my works I have in store.

Six Sentence Sunday - Nov 18th

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you are getting your fill of the amazing entries we have over on SixSunday. If you haven't - go back and read, read, and read some more!

L'Amore Perfetto is a charming romance for someone who doesn't want a difficult/complicated premise - and for those who want to feel teary and say "ahhhh" when the ending comes. A recent reader told me that she was suggesting it to all her high school and college friends. Another reader is in her 50s and adored it.

This scene is in the first chapter where our heroine is being pressured by her roommate to apply to L'Amore Perfetto, a dating service. Nicki decides to get something out of it and suggests they made a deal.

“What kind of a deal?” she asked, walking into the room.

“Well if,” I emphasized the word, “I apply to this L’Amore Perfetto, you have to agree to something.”

“Agree to what?” she asked, narrowing her eyes. I hadn’t expected her to agree right away, but I was disappointed nonetheless.

“If I apply and don’t get accepted,” I said slowly, “then you need to agree to never set me up again. Or insist I go out to bars and clubs,” I tacked on quickly.

Very smart, Nicki,  but will Kristen accept? Find out in L'Amore Perfetto!

Six Sentence Sunday

Hi again! Time for another 6 Sentence Sunday!

I had to decide between giving you more L'Amore Perfetto, some more In Search of the Drasta, or to give you a peak into another WIP.  Then I remembered... I have a tiny article out that I wrote called 'Choose to Know'. It was something I found through trial and error when I worked hard at the Law of Attraction and found myself continually hitting a wall and not gaining what I was trying to attract. When I came across this tiny little thing and it began to work for me, I wrote it out to share with others.

After studying the law of attraction for 9 months, I came up with something that works incredibly well when my brain laughs at any affirmation (or afformation) I create.

It is hard to believe and indeed know that something will work out, especially when your brain keeps laughing at you whenever you say it. And when your brain laughs, it is hard to put out the correct vibration to attract whatever you are going after. With four little words, you can stop that laughter. What are those four little words, you ask? Simple.

You can purchase the article through PayPal and immediately have access.

Happy Six Sentence Sunday

For this Six Sentence Sunday, I thought I would give you a look into a WIP. It is my next dating service romance. This set of sentences is from the beginning of the book as our heroine deals with her newest blind date.

He was still talking. And eating. From the moment they were seated at the private table for two in the neighborhood’s newest restaurant, Jay had been stuffing his face. Or talking. Sometimes he attempted multi-tasking and did them both at the same time. When that would happen, Ari wanted to ask for a splatter guard from their waiter but worried it would come across as rude.

Poor Ari, stuck in the world of blind dates. Maybe a dating service is just what she needs?

New cover for L'Amore Perfetto!

I will admit I liked the pink cover for L'Amore Perfetto, but I knew it wasn't the best and it definitely wasn't perfect for its genre. Especially as it is such a nice, heart-warming romance.

As such, I have just redone the cover. It should be showing soon on Amazon and will be updated on Smashwords as well. Over the next few weeks that new cover will slowly make its way out to all the eRetailers. I hope you like it as much as I do.

It's just another six sentence sunday!

Happy Six Sentence Sunday!

Am I channeling the Bangles? Nope! But it is another amazing Six Sentence Sunday!

Hey again! Yep, it is another L'Amore Perfetto post for six sentence sunday - hope you don't mind!

This week I thought I would give you a look-see into how the guys are feeling about waiting to meet their soul mates. In this scene, Ryan and Christopher are visiting their father and Ryan has just announced that L'Amore Perfetto has found his soul mate.

“So, did he tell you anything about her?”

Ryan shook his head. “Nope. Just that she was at orientation for her training today and that he thought I would be bowled over by her.”

“She was at orientation?” Dad asked, raising his eyebrows.

“Yeah, why?”

As well, you should ask, Ryan! Read more in L'Amore Perfetto!

Book Description:

Chick-lit meets a modern-day fairy-tale.

Character Studies

So many characters, so little time.

Usually when I write a story, I just take off and write. Each character introduces themself and I get to know them as the story progresses. Not this time.

For once I am writing a story so complex that I need to know the characters inside and out even before I begin. Thus... I am doing character stories. History stories of each character so I know why they are the way they are and how they react to certain incidents. I know I need to do it and I already have short bios of each character down. Now, I need to write their stories so that I can write THE story.

It makes it hard when I just want to start THE story. But, I shall press on! I think if I can get this done, the writing for the main story will go much smoother as I won't have to stop and think "who is this character again and how do they do things"?

An intriguing YA epic begins...

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

Okay, so this is the first blog hop I have become involved in.

What is The Next Big Thing Blog Hop? Well, as an author I post information about a work in progress, giving you a look into what I am doing now as well as give a thank you to the person who told me about it and suggesting other authors. Okay, sounds simple enough! Let's try this thing:

The wonderful person that tagged my blog is Thianna D! Check out her Hop!

What is the working title of your book?
To be honest, I never title a story until it is complete, so it has the unlikely working title of "story 542". Engaging isn't it?

Where did the idea come from for the book?
I loved L'Amore Perfetto and the response to it has been amazing. Since I enjoy writing humor filled, feel-good romances and I enjoyed writing a story about a dating service, this just seemed to work.

What genre does your book fall under?
\It all depends on whether I make my character 28 or 16. I haven't quite decided yet. Either way it will be a romance.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Oh dear. I don't have any idea. The hero kind of looks like an older Taylor Lautner and the heroine, while I see her in my head - I can't think of any actress that would be like her.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Kind of depends on the age to be honest. But it will go something like this:
Tired of the dates her sister sets her up with, a young woman gives online dating a try -  completely shocked to find out she has tapped into a paranormal dating service; when it all comes down, can she truly love a man from another dimension?

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
I hope to get this one published by a regular publisher. I would like to see it in print, not just in eFormat.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
Still writing... and writing... and writing... My heroine is a talkative little thing, but I haven't had the time to finish it!

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
If I go young adult, I would say Twilight as it has that kind of feel. If not, I have no idea. LOL

Who or What inspired you to write this book?
The reaction to L'Amore Perfetto has been overwhelmingly positive and I still love reading it. I like to write things that I know people will read and re-read for years to come.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
There is a very bad character in this book. Positively evil - and he has had a hold on women in her family for centuries... she just doesn't know it yet.

Okay, And now for some blogs you should check out because they are written by amazing authors!

Six Sentence Sunday

As several people contacted me about my book from two weeks ago, I figured I would give a little more about L'Amore Perfetto here.

Imagine if you found a dating service that promised you the world. If you were accepted as one of their exclusive clientele, what would you go through to get there? In this scene from L'Amore Perfetto, Nicki and her roommates find out just what the application process is.

“Step 1: You will fill out the five-page questionnaire and submit it with two photos of just yourself, a face and a full body shot. No glamour shots accepted, they would be grounds for immediate refusal.
“Step 2: If you pass Step 1, you will be invited to an interview with five of our relationship specialists.
“Step 3: If you pass Step 2, you will be required to submit to a complete physical with a physician chosen by us.
“Step 4: If you pass Step 3, you will be invited to an intimate dinner party, so that we can observe you in a social situation.
“Step 5: If you reach Step 5, you will fill out a twenty-page questionnaire with one of our relationship experts. This will be an all-day interview.”

Looks a bit daunting, would you be willing to go through that? Nicki does and finds a life so much better than anything she ever expected.

Book Description:

Chick-lit meets a modern-day fairy-tale.

Six Sentence Sunday

Next week I will be back with more sentences from L'Amore Perfetto, but this week, I thought I would share a blurb from my green book.

I used to hate cleaning, mainly because of the caustic fumes, the way my hands would feel afterward (even when wearing gloves), and the knowledge of the man-made poisons I was using in my house. One day, I decided, NO WAY! and started researching green ways to clean my home. I tweaked the few that I found, created more, and used those recipes to create Green Cleaning.

For this six sentence sunday, I am giving you a recipe for my spider repellent sachet for your home.

For the spider repellent sachet, you will need cheesecloth, string, cedar shavings, 5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 5 drops of Tea Tree Oil. Cut large squares (double strength) of cheesecloth and place cedar shavings in the center. Add Lavender and Tea Tree Oils. Tie up with string. Six Sentence Sunday:

I do love this Six Sentence Sunday idea where I can share with you a snippit of my work. This week, I am introducing you to Braun, the lead character in In Search of the Drasta, a fantasy novel.

Braun Tapesh was, in fact, quite brilliant, but he truly believed himself better than anyone else.

As ideas were put forth and rejected, the junior scientists started to worry about their own fates.

Book Description:

Some days it just doesn’t pay to be brilliant. Braun Tapesh is the chief scientist for the planet E’Loi and is happy to tell anyone who happens to be standing near him that it is he who saved his planet.

Despite his advanced scientific knowledge, Braun makes a small mistake and unwillingly finds himself on a rescue mission to find the Drasta—the last true Eloim female born on the planet.

Six Sentence Sunday - L'Amore Perfetto

This is my first Six Sentence Sunday post and I am excited for it. I am featuring my newest novel.

I am very happy about my newest novel, L'Amore Perfetto, a light-hearted novel that I call chick-lit meets modern-day fairy tale. In this segment, Nicki is talking to Elizabeth about her recent physical given by Elizabeth's husband, a hunky doctor who she met through the L'Amore Perfetto Dating Service.

“He is really sweet. I mean, let’s face it, none of us like that pelvic exam, and yet, he was so quick and didn’t make a big deal of it. Plus, he took time to talk to me afterward. You got yourself a winner there,” I teased.

“Don’t I know it,” she laughed. “And I have no doubt your soul mate will be just as wonderful.”

Book Description:

Chick-lit meets a modern-day fairy-tale.

Nicki hates to date; the whole putting herself out there night after night after night is not her thing. Unfortunately, her roommate is the exact opposite. When Kristen comes up with her newest man-catching ploy, joining a discriminating dating service that accepts less than 5% of its female applicants, Nicki sees an opportunity and gets Kristen to agree that if she applies and does not get accepted, that Kristen won't bug her about going out for nine months.

Full steam ahead, she jumps into the multi-step application process. Each step increases her desire to make it to the next one and when she makes it, she is thrown into a world she didn’t know existed. Will she falter in this new life or will she make it to the end and meet her soul mate?

New month... Fall is here!

Don't you love the change of seasons? I do. The unbearable oppressive heat of Summer has broken and Fall has snuck in. Even though the days are still getting up into the 80s, they don't bear that heat that will make you melt just by looking outside. Not to mention the crisp coolness of the morning air.

What am I doing? Well, I am knee-deep in my new novel. I found I really loved L'Amore Perfetto. It was fun to write and every time I re-read it, I cry at the same parts and feel so good at the end. So, my new novel is another romance/dating service story, though this one has more of a paranormal bent to it. So far, I have 30,000 words written. There are a lot more to go before I can consider the first draft done.

As ever, I hope that once I complete and get the story edited, that I will catch the eye of an agent and then a publisher, but if not, I will be happy to publish it myself.

Thank you so much for your continued support.

Have a wonderful Fall everyone!

Book Sales- 15% of goal

Well, it is August 1st (when did that happen?)

So, I had a goal to sell 1000 copies of my books by July 31st.

Of the sales I can track, I sold 151 copies.

I must say I am happy for 2 months of sales. But I know I can do better. I kept most of my advertising to Twitter and will now branch out.

So, new goal. Sell 1000 copies by August 31.

Probably won't blog too much - will be a bit busy, between writing my five new novels and getting advertising done. I so appreciate your support!

JulNoWriMo

I know it has been forever since I posted... well, forever in online-land. I have just been so incredibly busy!

First, I have been editing for a friend who is self-publishing like crazy, so that has kept me busy.

I have also been involved with JulNoWrMo. If you aren't familiar with it. JulNoWrMo is a contest of sorts where each writer is challenged to write a 50,000 word book, story, whatever in one month. So far I have over 100,000 words written for this month, though that number count is spread between several different novels.

My sales are slowly increasing and I am grateful for that! I am still working toward my goal of selling 1000+ copies of my books by July 31st! I have a ways to go to get there. Wanna help? Check out my books! Links to their Amazon sales page are at the bottom of the descriptions!

Thanks so much for your support!

A new 45-day challenge

For those who are not familiar with it - for several years now there has been a social network called the Boundless Living Challenge, which emphasizes 45 days to a goal. I have participated in a few that have changed my life. Some of my goals were literal, some more ethereal, but the changes that occurred in those 45 days were astronomical. To say I am not the same person I was 4 years ago when they began would be as true as I can put it.

So, I am starting my own 45-day challenge today. While I have been publishing my works for a few years now, I have never felt as proud of what I do as I do now. I love my books and everyone who reads them gives me amazing accolades. So, I have set myself a goal.

And what is that goal?

Between now and July 31st, I will have sold over 1000 copies of my books, print and electronic combined. How will I do that? The how is up to the universe! I will follow any direction that seems right and let the universe take care of the rest!

I am excited, energized, scared, terrified and thrilled to be starting this challenge. Who wants to read an amazing book? I have a few!

Check out my author page at Amazon.com~! Please Like the books and if you buy I would really appreciate it if you leave a review there as well!

Thanks so much for your support and encouragement:)

Even editors make mistakes. Authors even worse sometimes.

Edit: After much thinking, ruminating, and biting of fingernails, I read a tweet by Catherine Russell @darkness6601 after I asked what others thought I should do. She said "Do what's right for the integrity of your book". Well to keep the integrity, I needed to change Il Amore Perfetto to L'Amore Perfetto. Otherwise, it just was not right to me. I submitted the changes and they should be live within 12 hours.

Once again, Thanks Paolo for bringing this to my attention!

Former Post:

There are a lot of complaints against books that are published without being "edited". True, there are some ghastly books, but the fact is, even with editors getting their hands on a book, it does not mean it will come out perfectly clean.

Want proof? Open any book by any publisher. I can almost guarantee you will find at least one if not more issues that were not caught by an editor.

Now, this is not to degrade editing. Editors do a great job! Can't live through a book-writing process without an editor! But, even they can overlook something.

Why am I writing this? My book Il Amore Perfetto - well, I was just told of a rather HUGE issue with it. This is basically a "too late now" now that it has been published kind of issue, though if I take it to print, I will surely fix it.

What is the issue? In Italian, nouns are either masculine or feminine.

My Italian professor, Signorina Friga would yell at me for an hour probably for the mistake I made. It is so simple, I completely overlooked it. Again, what is the issue? Amore is feminine, not masculine. This is something the average English-speaking person would not know, but I find it a rather embarrassing blunder - and its mine, all mine.

So the title of the book and dating agency should be L'Amore Perfetto. *palm to face*

Scusate il mio italiano. E 'male.

It's a woman?

Creating the characters for a story is an incredible journey. Sometimes the character itself comes to me and I can just stick a name that fits the personality. Today, I went around it differently.

I had a story idea that was amusing me and started penning down ideas for it. While I could see some of the storyline, the main character was cloudy to me. Then I started looking up  baby-name sites. After two hours of searching and not finding, an idea came to me. I had to google it to get the correct spelling but suddenly I had a name. Within fifteen minutes, my character had a bio, a basic background, and a sarcastic sense of humor.

I feel like I gave birth to a 25-year-old with no patience!

Ah the joys of author-hood...

a word or three about fanfiction

There are a lot of people out there who look down on, make fun of, and bluntly disregard fanfiction and fanfiction authors. That is incredibly silly in my opinion.

Sure there are some bad authors on fanfiction sites - but there are some incredibly bad authors who have been published by brick&mortar publishing  houses as well.

The thing is - fanfiction actually has a tremendous amount of good authors, some are budding writers who are using it to fine-tune their writing styles, some are just using it as a stress-reliever.

As a fanfiction writer myself, I will tell you that what you get from writing fanfiction is immeasurable. Even though I had been published previously, I was still afraid to get my stuff "out there". I am no longer afraid of that. The hundreds and hundreds of positive reviews I received from my fanfics firmed my opinion of my writing - I know there is an audience out there for my sense of humor and my writing style. Plus, I found a niche I never would have imagined myself in.

So next time you consider turning your nose up at fanfiction... think twice. You might find your niche where you did not expect it. And you are sure to find some amazing stories about your favorite characters!

Visit: The Writer's Coffee Shop Library, where authors can post fanfics AND original stories (of any rating). Plus, they have a publishing company - so if you want to get published by an actual house... this might be the place to go.

Fanfiction.net This site has a tremendous amount of authors/stories, but it does crack down on anything adult-rated. Every once in awhile they scour through and delete stories because of that.

I know there are many out there, but those are the two I have had the most dealings with as far as posting and reading stories.

Take a chance - go check out fanfics by authors you have never heard of - you might be pleasantly surprised. If you want to write, what is easier than posting work under a pseudonym that nobody will know you by?

Come on... do it. I dare ya!

Indie author network

I am happy to say I am now a member of the Independent Author Network. This is an amazing group of authors and I am happy to be one of them.

In years past publishing your own work was looked down upon - seen as "oh so you could not get a real publisher". Thankfully that seems to be changing with the likes of Kindle and Nook as well as the proliferation of POD publishers. I have used both CreateSpace and iUniverse for print and have to say - I have had more luck with CreateSpace at getting my books sold. Maybe it has to do with its tie to Amazon? I don't know. Plus, CreateSpace is free!

But I do know that there are some amazing writers who are publishing independently. Check out all the amazing 535+ authors at the Independent Author Network. You will be glad you did!

The Ever-growing pile...

I suppose other writers are like I am - an avid reader. I've been reading since before I could actually read. Yes, I had one of those mothers who would read a book to me, the Original Winnie the Pooh as a matter of fact and I would follow along as she did.

Since that time, I have read voraciously. For six years I worked at a bookstore and let me tell you - most of my paycheck went to my book addiction.

Now I find myself in the wonderful arena of being a published author. My time is taken up with marketing my books, writing new stuff, editing, writing on my blog, as well as helping some friends of mine who are starting to self-publish.

Does that mean I buy fewer books? NO! I buy more than I ever have before - but the problem is I don't have the time to read them all. At least I don't have to buy more bookshelves. Thanks to the wonder that is Kindle and Nook, all those books are taking up space on my Samsung Tablet.

But that doesn't mean that I am free of the guilt that comes from a library full of books I haven't read. Every time I look at my Tablet, I can practically see all the books glaring at me, waiting for me to do what I promised when I bought them - read.

As much as I miss reading like I used to, right now I must admit I am having the time of my life writing, editing, marketing, and writing some more.

Don't worry little electronic books - I will get to you yet! If for no other reason... sometimes I need to rest my brain while still getting something worthwhile into it. And I do not do TV. The wonderful world of books has too much going for it.

Go on... pick up a book. You know you want to;)

Need to make more time

Some say time is finite, some say it is a fallacy - that time was created by humans but does not truly exist.

I don't know that I subscribe to either thought, but I do know that I never seem to have enough time to read all the stuff I want to read. My Tablet is backed up with Nook and Kindle books I want to read and review, my bookshelves are overloaded with books I love that I would like to re-read. And yet, I don't have time for them.

There is a truism that you have to make time for the stuff you truly believe in, so I guess I will need to add to my lists - "Read for an hour a day"

Erg. Speaking of lists, I need to go write mine for today. I need a list writer. I do the list pretty well once written, but writing it? That is like planning my day and I truly enjoy living an unplanned life.

*sigh* Where was I? Oh yes, back to writing...

Genre-Jumping. The New Sport?

Authors can get into a rut – I know I do all the time – which is why I enjoy genre-jumping. Sounds like a sport, doesn’t it?

Maybe it should become an Olympic event!

Sports Announcer 1:
Yes, folks, and now up is Cynthia Kimball. She is planning on doing the long jump from humorous fantasy to a political thriller. Can she do it? Here she goes folks, watch her write… Look at how her hand flies across the page.

Sports Announcer 2:
Wait, do I see a joke on that page?

Sports Announcer 1:
Why yes, John, looks like while you can take the girl out of the genre, you can’t take the genre out of the girl…

I love writing different genres, just as I enjoy reading them. But the one thing that stays is my quirky sense of humor. My fiction work is rife with it. My current published works: L'Amore Perfetto and In Search of the Drasta are humorous from beginning to end. Not to mention the amount of manuscripts I have finished that are just sitting there taunting me. They are filled with humor as well.

Except two.

Those two books were the hardest for me to write and I am still not happy with them – thus why they are hiding under a pile of… whatever that is. But am I unhappy because they just did not turn out well? Or because they are missing humor? I’m not sure and am not really in the mood to shrink my own head (or is that what a blog truly is?)

For the foreseeable future I can say that all you will see published from me will have humor. But as a woman I hold true to the statement that I can change my mind at any time. And usually do.

Now, where was that notebook about inter-dimensional breeding practices?

Must I make a list?

List making… why do I abhor it so?

I don’t understand why list making is so abhorrent to me. I know that when I make lists, that I accomplish what is on it, and yet sitting down and making a list? My inner being yells NO!

Sometimes I think it is the right-brained me who hates barriers. A list is definitely a barrier as it defines what I need to do and I am more a ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ kind of girl. But, as I check things off a list and see it get completed, I gain an incredible inner sense of satisfaction. And yet… I still loathe lists.

As long as I can remember, I have hated being told what to do; albeit not in every circumstance. I am a rule-follower by nature and I enjoy following and being guided. Ordered? Not so much. Someone orders me to do something and every molecule in my body shouts to fight against it.

Hmm. So do lists shout at me? Are they an order from some other dimension?

Maybe I need to start viewing lists as something different, as a help, a guide, and a friendly leader who is trying to help me achieve my goals.

Wait, am I having an epiphany? A list does get me where I want to be in life. It helps me get through all the must-dos in any given day so that I can accomplish my goals and continue along the road I have chosen. So maybe lists are a good thing?

… Nah! I still detest lists.

All the books are now listed!

Yay! So, CynthiaKimball.com is back up and running again. Thank you WordPress!

The navigation above lists my books. Currently they are alphabetical, but I will figure out how to get them in the order I want them. As you will notice, there is a rather large genre difference. 1 green cleaning book, 1 internet-related book, 1 non-fiction article, 1 sci-fi novel, and 1 chick-lit novel.

What can I say? I am multi-genre'd.

The new CynthiaKimball.com

Okay, so the previous CynthiaKimball.com crashed and burned. It was a beautiful flash site that was unfortunately not scaleable. So, as I had been considering on whether to do a blog or not, it seemed the perfect time to cross-over.

Over the next few days, I will get all my books over as well as start blogging!

Welcome to the new CynthiaKimball.com
